Medical Fascism In the “Land of the Free:” The Flexner Report

by Charles on June 10, 2009

The popularity of alternative/natural healing modalities is at an all-time high. The freedom to pursue those approaches is under constant  and unrelenting assault. Why is this? How did we get to where we are today?

800px-liberty-statue-from-belowIf your child has cancer, do you have the freedom to seek the treatment of YOUR choice?  Answer: NO.  The recent headlines attest to this as an international manhunt pursued a mother trying to get natural cancer therapies for her teenage son. Call it Manhunt Medicine. Did you ever ask yourself why the “authorities” deemed the situation so dire that an international manhunt — usually reserved for the most dangerous criminals — was undertaken? Or how about this: have you asked yourself why raw milk is illegal in most states when it has been repeatedly proven to be  far safer and more nutritious than the dead pasteurized version from cows fed an unnatural diet and penned up unnaturally their whole lives, given drugs, hormones and antibiotics all in the name of   increased milk production? Or, perhaps you wondered why the medical “authorities” have  hounded Chiropractic doctors for the past century; or why traditional allopathic physicians turn their collective noses down at alternative physicians; or wondered why so many pharmaceutical commercials are on TV; or why drug manufacturers may legally claim their drugs treat disease (by which is usually meant they manage the symptoms as opposed to any actual curing) but supplement manufacturers can make no such claim. Land of the free? A friend reminded me the other day of a true story about some visitors from the USSR who were surprised you couldn’t buy raw milk in the so called “land of the free.” (They always drank raw milk back in Russia).

As people interested in natural approaches to health and wellness, “real health” as opposed to drug-managed numbness, we are interested in root causes of disease;  for example what is the root cause of someone’s cancer? We want to know this because if we can correct that root cause then we have a good chance of reversing the cancer. What we want to explore today is the root cause or the answer to the question: “how did the land of the free become so tyrannized by the medical/governmental/industrial authorities when it comes to something so personal as our health and how we take care of ourselves?”

The Flexner Report

A blogger friend of mine recently looked into this issue. He wrote: “America actually has a national socialist (or fascist) medical system where certain politically favored entities are given a monopoly over the medical market and allowed to defeat their competitors through regulations and licensing.  Any national socialist system can be recognized by its philosophy of private profits and public losses…If America has a fascist medical system, how did it come into existence?  Americans love to call their country “the land of the free and the home of the brave…The American people would never vote in a government which proclaimed its desire to institute totalitarian rule or to make the United States a communist nation.  The truth is that the current medical system came into existence through subterfuge and deception.  Although there have been many steps along the road from free market medicine to government managed health care, the most important increment was the publishing of the Flexner Report in 1910.”You can read the complete article here.

Among the things you will learn in the article:

—In the 1800′s the American Medical Association (AMA) resented their competitors who drove down the cost of medical care and drew away customers;
—The AMA called upon the strong arm of government force to vanquish the competition, it did so through regulating medical schools;
—A report was commissioned calling for the standardization of medical education,  this was the Flexner Commission;
—The report of the Commission concluded that there were too many doctors and medical schools in America and recommended reducing the number of schools.  The public  outcry generated by the report convinced congress to declare the AMA the only body  with the right to grant medical school licenses in the United States.

The Flexner Report had a profound impact on what we now call alternative therapies. When Flexner researched his report, “modern” medicine faced vigorous competition from several quarters, including osteopathic medicine, eclectic medicine, physiomedicalism, naturopathy and homeopathy. Flexner clearly doubted the scientific validity of all forms of medicine other than biomedicine, deeming any approach to medicine that did not advocate the use of treatments such as vaccines to prevent and cure illness as tantamount to quackery and charlatanism. Medical schools that offered training in various disciplines including eclectic medicine, physiomedicalism, naturopathy, and homeopathy, were told either to drop these courses from their curriculum or lose their accreditation and underwriting support. A few schools resisted for a time, but eventually all complied with the Report or shut their doors. (Wikipedia)

Another good source of information on the Flexner Report may be found in an article entitled “He Who Pays the Piper — Creation of the Modern Medical (Drug) Establishment.” It’s an excellent and eye-opening read on the stranglehold of American medicine over our health. The author points out that “while doctors are forced to spend hundreds of hours studying the names and actions of all kinds of man-made drugs, they are lucky if they receive even a portion of a single course on basic nutrition. Many have none at all. The result is that the average doctor’s wife or secretary knows more about practical nutrition than he does.”

The Flexner Report needs to be more widely known and understood. It is a critical piece of history that we as natural healing researches and writers will want to be familiar with  as we advocate for raw milk rights, for the  freedom for everyone to seek the holistic treatments of one’s choice and to educate the public with clarity about where we stand, how we got here and where we go from here. Our freedoms  — and our health — are at stake.

An interesting comment from another site summarizes nicely the intent and impact of the Flexner Report. It says in part:

“The Big Three have collectively engaged in a medical conspiracy for the better part of 70 years to influence legislative bodies on both the state and federal level to create regulations that promote the use of drug medicine while simultaneously creating restrictive, controlling mechanisms (licensing, government approval, etc) designed to limit and stifle the availability of non-drug, alternative modalities. The conspiracy to limit and eliminate competition from non-drug therapies began with the Flexner Report of 1910.

Abraham Flexner was engaged by John D. Rockefeller who wanted to dominate control over petrolem, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals
The Carnegie Foundation report titled “Medical Education in the United States and Canada”. Page 22 of the report said: “the privileges of the medical school can no longer be open to casual strollers from the highway”
