Our Children: 25% Are Taking Prescription Drugs — REGULARLY!

by Charles on December 28, 2010

The Wall Street Journal has the story.” And it’s about how our kids are being drugged beyond belief instead of learning to live and eat for real health. And these kids wouldn’t be getting these drugs if doctors weren’t prescribing them. Why don’t doctors teach our children how to achieve real health? What happened to the Hippocratic Oath?:

“I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion. But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.” Let’s get on with today’s news:

“Gage Martindale, who is 8 years old, has been taking a blood-pressure drug since he was a toddler. “I want to be healthy, and I don’t want things in my heart to go wrong,” he says. And, of course, his mom is always there to check Gage’s blood pressure regularly with a home monitor, and to make sure the second-grader doesn’t skip a dose of his once-a-day enalapril.

These days, the medicine cabinet is truly a family affair. More than a quarter of U.S. kids and teens are taking a medication on a chronic basis, according to Medco Health Solutions Inc., the biggest U.S. pharmacy-benefit manager with around 65 million members.” Read the rest here.

That’s hardly the end of the story. The WSJ looks at the out of control numbers. The FOODMATTERS website asks the haunting question, “why are we giving prescription drugs to children when we don’t have a clue about the risks?” “Children as young as eight with high cholesterol should be put on statins, according to a report published last week. This is the latest idea for tackling the obesity epidemic and the fact that it came from the highly regarded American Academy of Pediatrics means many doctors will take the recommendation seriously.”

“However, it has stirred up a furor in America as well as in Britain, with experts viewing the suggestion with alarm. ‘There are far too many uncertainties involved with giving children these drugs,’ said Professor Andrew Neil, a clinical epidemiologist at Oxford University and adviser to HeartUK. ‘The way to help them is with lifestyle changes, getting them to eat properly and exercise.’” The rest of the story is here.

Exactly. That would be REAL health, not some palliative with unknown risks, not to mention the very real possibility of conditioning the child for the rest of his/her life to the idea of taking drugs as an easy way out of symptoms. We worry about children starting to smoke at a young age. Why don’t we show an equal concern about them using prescription drugs and developing a dependency on a pill instead of a proper lifestyle?
